4 Reasons to use Suspended Movement Training
Suspension Training is not just for gymnasts and Cirque Du Soleil artists. A versatile piece of equipment that has been popular in modern fitness since the 1990s thanks to TRX founder Randy Restrick, suspension training does date back as far as the 1800s. Acrobatic displays in circus and carnival shows were big crowd pleasers and if you’ve recently seen the film “The Greatist Showman” you will know how captivating these shows can be.
Rope and suspension training requires large amounts of neuromuscular recruitment to maintain static and dynamic postures while exercises or moves are being performed. The resulting outcomes lead to very strong and lean physiques for the performer or gym client.
Suspension training can elicit a number of fitness and skill related benefits for your clients including:
- Increased neuromuscular recruitment
- Increased activation of Stabilising & synergist muscles to support prime movers
- Strengthening of core musculature with lower risk levels than free weights.
- Enhanced muscular endurance of postural muscle groups
- Enhanced muscular coordination
- Enhanced agility
- Greater Joint mobility
A very useful tool for clients, but how can it benefit you as a Personal Trainer?
Here’s 4 Benefits of Suspended Movement Training:
Suitable for all Levels
Suspended movement training can be used for beginners and the more experienced client. With numerous progression opportunities for body weight exercises, suspension training is very useful for developing new and engaging workouts for your client. Design a full workout, a warm up, or a few exercises incorporated into your main session. The more upright you are the easier it is, perform exercises closer to the ground and you will find the force required to complete the same movement increases. The beauty of gravity and the use of levers make suspension training fully adjustable for increasing the force developed by the muscles to overcome inertia (moving the body against gravity).
It’s a Real eye Catcher
Because it’s different and not an every day inclusion to workouts, gym members will stay away from it as they don’t know what to do with suspension training. Become a suspension expert in your club and you take on a specialist area of training that will make you stand out from other Personal Trainers in the club. A great way to market your skills is to train on suspension equipment during peak times of the club, exercises that could be achievable by gym members and the odd one that takes a little more practice and looks exciting. Members will see you know how to use suspension training and those looking for strong physiques without lifting huge free weights will be drawn to you. Another way to introduce suspension training is to offer 15-minute tasters during peak hours with members coming in to train. Once you have three or four tasters running you will soon pick up enquires about one to one training or you may be in a position to start a suspension class due to demand.
Small Foot Space
A piece of suspension training equipment really only needs a wall anchor in a gym environment to get started. In a crowded gym, space can sometimes be an issue, but if you never have to move from the space of a mat to train a client, that will save you time and energy lifting dumbbells and unloading barbells. Bigger suspension areas will have a rig for four or five suspension points allowing a greater provision for group suspension classes and exercises.
Portable
Suspension training equipment can be unhooked and moved anywhere. Train indoor or outdoor. There are many anchor points available to use and some can be used in doorframes. This makes suspension training equipment a very handy and cost effective tool for a Personal Trainer. Why not take your suspension trainer to the beach?
Being a professional Personal Trainer requires work; all the best equipment in the world will not make you a good trainer. Reps; reps, reps, will make you a great trainer, learn to use the equipment you choose and understand it’s benefits. Being able to demonstrate safely and effectively will build a level of trust in you as a trainer from prospective clients. This makes you an expert in the eye of the gym member, an authority in the style of training you are marketing and the style members are looking for. There are no short cuts in the fitness industry, so make time to put in the reps and become an expert in your field.
