Are you finding it more and more difficult to help some of your clients to lose weight? No matter what they do or how much they work out, they just can’t seem to hit their goal weight and you don’t know why. As a personal trainer, it is up to you to create a solution that will help your clients reach their fitness goals and that can mean creating a stronger trainer/client relationship with them and asking a lot of questions about their eating habits. If you are considering becoming a personal trainer, ensuring that your clients reach their fitness goals will ensure your success. Let’s take a look at how you can help them do just that:
Portion Size Is The Key To Weight Loss
Sometimes, your client might be eating healthy foods, but their portion sizes are much larger than they should be. Portion sizes in the UK has increased in the past 2 decades with restaurants competing for your business by offering fuller plates and more high fat menu items designed to tempt you and get you in the door. This is called ‘Portion Distortion’, and no matter how healthy a person eat, if they are taking in too many calories, they won’t see a decrease in weight and, while frustrating, it is easily fixed.
4 Ways to Help Your Clients Manage Their Portions
Use Portion Size Hand Symbols- teach your clients about portion size hand symbol charts which can be found online and downloaded. These can help them understand how much they should eat and it is a good reminder for us as well.
Use A Smaller Plates- one of the easiest ways to help your clients control their food portions is to teach them to use smaller plates when dining at home. On average, they will eat half what they have been eating and that can make losing weight and keeping it off a lot easier. This is provided they don’t go back for seconds.
Read Food Labels- teach your clients to start reading food labels as they contain a wide range of useful information that can help them understand just how much fat and calories the average food item contains.
Share A Meal- most restaurant meals offer enough food for two or more people and sharing a meal with their spouse or a friend will not only help them reduce their caloric intake, but it will save them money as well.
